So which xTool should you buy?
I manage procurement for a 14-person metal fabrication and small-batch production shop. For the past four years I've tracked every equipment invoice in a cost tracking system, so I don't argue about prices from memory. I argue about total cost.

But the D7W is not a fiber laser device. It's a diode-based machine. The F1 Ultra is a fiber laser device — or rather, a dual-laser device with a fiber source and a diode source. The price gap is the gap between a hobby-grade tool and a production-grade marking tool.
Here is the cost-controller part: compare total cost, not list price. A fiber laser device costs more because the laser source, the galvo scanner, the F-theta lens, the controller, and the safety enclosure are heavier hardware. The D7W's price is lower because it is lighter hardware, not because the seller is hiding fees.

A fiber laser starts with pump diodes that send light into an ytterbium-doped optical fiber. The doped fiber amplifies the light by stimulated emission. Fiber Bragg gratings at both ends form the resonant cavity. The output is a 1064 nm beam that metals absorb well, which is why fiber lasers are famous for metal engraving and cutting.
The F1 Ultra uses that principle in a desktop device. The D7W uses a diode laser, not a fiber laser. Diode lasers work on wood, leather, acrylic, and coated metals, but bare metals are not their strength. That difference changes your job mix, not just your bank balance.

Dimension 4: speed and repeatability
For metal marking, the difference is not subtle. A diode laser can mark coated metal or wood, but bare stainless steel, aluminum, and brass are fiber laser territory.
In our shop, a stainless steel ID tag took about two minutes on a diode setup with marking spray. The F1 Ultra does the same tag in about ten seconds. That changes your hourly rate. If you value an operator at €50 per hour, the D7W's lower price disappears after a few hundred jobs.
I only know our context. We do short-run industrial marking: serial tags, panels, and small parts. If you are doing craft items in small batches, the D7W might be the rational choice. If you are quoting production work, the fiber laser device is usually the better math.
Dimension 5: the price that isn't on the first screen
My first question to any supplier is not 'what's your best price?' It's 'what's not included?'
In Q2 2024 I evaluated a quote that looked cheap until I added the rotary module, the fume extractor, the protective lenses, and shipping. The total jumped by about 25 percent. That experience taught me to ask for the complete bundle list up front.
xTool does a better job than most at showing bundles, but you still need to check the add-ons. The F1 Ultra needs a fume extractor for most work. The D7W benefits from a honeycomb panel and air assist. None of those are hidden fees, but they are easy to miss when you are staring at a price.
The transparency stance is simple: I'll take a higher number with clear inclusions over a low number with 'just a few more parts' to be productive.
So which xTool should you buy?
Buy the D7W if you are testing the market, making one-off gifts, running low-volume acrylic or wood projects, and your TCO spreadsheet doesn't include operator billable hours.
Buy the F1 Ultra if you are a business that gets paid for metal marking. If you quote at least a few dozen metal parts per month, the speed difference and the lower redo rate will make up for the higher initial price.
In our shop, the F1 Ultra replaced an outsourced marking vendor. The payback was roughly 14 months. That is not a promise; that was our volume, our pricing, and our process. If your volumes are lower, the payback gets longer.
