Why This Comparison? (And Why I'm the Right Person to Make It)
I'm an operations manager handling custom engraving and small-batch production orders for about 4 years now. I've personally made—and documented—enough mistakes to fill a small spreadsheet of regret. The Sticker Price Illusion
On paper, the WeCreate laser is cheaper. Significantly. When I was shopping, I assumed (there's that word again) that meant better value for a startup budget.
I assumed 'similar specifications meant similar results.' Didn't verify that assumption until I had a batch of 200 acrylic keychains that looked... not great. The WeCreate machine produced acceptable marks, but the consistency varied from piece to piece. On xTool S1, the same design on the same material came out uniform across the entire batch.
That $200 price difference on the machine? It cost me about $450 in redo material and labor on that single order. Plus the 1-week delay and an embarrassed conversation with the client.
Is the xTool S1 really worth the extra money?
For production work where consistency matters: yes. The S1's enclosure, air assist, and more precise gantry system meant fewer rejects. The WeCreate is fine for prototyping or low-volume work, but when you're running 50+ identical parts, those small inconsistencies add up.
Hidden Costs: Consumables and Maintenance
Here's something the comparison videos don't show you: the cost of keeping the machine running.
xTool S1 has a proprietary filter system. It works great—actually captures fumes effectively—but replacement filters cost around $35-50 each and need changing every few months depending on usage. The WeCreate uses a generic exhaust setup. Cheaper upfront, but the noise and fumes are worse. (I learned this when my shop smelled like burnt acrylic for a week. Not great for client visits.)
I went back and forth on this for a month. The WeCreate offered lower ongoing costs, but the xTool S1 offered a cleaner, quieter workspace. Ultimately, I chose the S1 for client-facing work because first impressions matter—if a client walks into a smoky shop, they assume the quality will match.

Unboxing to First Engraving: The WeCreate Struggle
I unboxed the WeCreate laser on a Tuesday. By Thursday, I still hadn't gotten a clean engraving on anything but cardboard. The software (LightBurn-compatible, but the default settings were off) required a lot of tweaking. If you're comfortable with laser settings, fine. For a new operator? Frustrating.
The xTool S1, in contrast, was running within an hour. The included software (xTool Creative Space) has presets for common materials. Not perfect, but close enough to start producing.
Looking back, I should have factored in setup time. At the time, I thought 'both work with LightBurn, they're basically the same.' They're not. The WeCreate requires more manual calibration.
The Software Equation
Both machines support LightBurn, which is the industry standard for laser control. But the out-of-box experience differs. The xTool S1's proprietary software gives you a gentler onboarding. The WeCreate pretty much expects you to know what you're doing.
If you're training an operator—or you're the operator learning on the job—that difference matters.
Dimension 3: Application Fit (What Each Machine Actually Excels At)
Engraving Quality: The Resolution Test
Industry standard for fine detail engraving is 300 DPI at the print head, but the laser spot size determines how much detail you can actually resolve. The xTool S1 has a 0.08mm spot size (claimed). The WeCreate is closer to 0.12mm.
For most logos and text, both are fine. But for fine hairline details—say, a map or a complex pattern—the S1 holds an edge. I did a test engraving of a company logo on a leather notebook cover. On the WeCreate, the thin lines of the logo's outline started to blur. On the S1, they remained crisp.
That error cost $890 in redo plus a 1-week delay. I'd engraved 60 notebooks with the blurry logo before I caught it. (We didn't have a formal quality check process for first articles. Now we do.)
Cutting Capacity: Thickness and Speed
The WeCreate cuts thicker materials slightly faster in some cases—its laser tube is a bit more powerful on paper (10W optical vs. the S1's 10W diode). But the S1's air assist is better integrated, which means cleaner cuts on materials like plywood and acrylic.
If your primary use case is cutting 3mm plywood for signage, the WeCreate is adequate. If you're cutting 5mm acrylic for display stands, the S1's cleaner edge (less polishing needed afterward) saves you finishing time.
The Verdict: Not a Winner, But a Choice
Choose the xTool S1 if: You need consistent quality across batches, you're training new operators, and you're doing client-facing work where output quality directly affects your brand perception. The xTool S1 laser engraver is the safer bet for production environments.
Choose the WeCreate laser if: Your budget is extremely tight, you're doing mostly prototyping or low-volume work, and you're comfortable dialing in settings yourself. It's a capable machine if you know what you're doing.
The decision kept me up at night, honestly. On paper, the WeCreate made sense for my budget. But my gut—and my experience with that smoky shop and those blurry logos—said reliability was worth the premium.
If I could redo that first purchase, I'd invest in the S1 from the start. But given what I knew then—nothing about the WeCreate's inconsistency—my choice was reasonable. I just paid the tuition in wasted materials and redo labor.
Now I maintain our team's pre-purchase checklist: budget total cost, not sticker price; verify with a test batch before committing to a machine; and always, always check the first article before running production. Learned that one the expensive way.
