5-Step Quality Checklist for Buying an xTool Laser or Handheld Plasma Cutter

A practical quality-inspector checklist for comparing xTool laser price, xTool portable laser options, laser CO2 cutter specs, and handheld plasma cutters with pilot arc before you sign a purchase order.

I'm a quality and compliance lead for a commercial equipment distributor. That means I review every spec sheet before it reaches customers—roughly 200 machines a year, and in 2025 so far I've rejected 14% of first submissions because the performance data didn't match the test unit. I read footnotes. That's the job.

This checklist is for a specific moment: you've decided you need an xTool laser, a handheld plasma cutter, or both, and now you're staring at price comparisons and not sure which number matters. Five steps. No fluff.

Step 1: Start with the material, not the machine

Ask the question in the wrong order and every following decision gets harder. Don't start with 'Which xTool should I buy?' Start with 'What is the worst thing I'll cut on a normal Tuesday?'

If that worst thing is acrylic, wood, leather, or other non-metal sheet goods, a laser CO2 cutter is in the right lane.   • Pilot arc. This is the feature that lets the torch start without touching the workpiece. If you're cutting painted, rusty, or uneven metal, pilot arc saves real time. If you're welding and also need a cutter, pilot arc is worth the money. If you only cut clean sheet in short bursts, a scratch-start unit can be fine. The word 'welder' in the search phrase doesn't mean the cutter will weld—it means you're comparing two tools in the same budget.

Step 4: Price the consumables before you fall in love

This is the step most people skip. Machine price is public. Consumables are hidden in a drawer somewhere, and they're the true cost.

For a laser CO2 cutter, look up the lens and tube replacement cost, plus the fume filter if you need one. For an xTool portable laser, check whether the laser module can be replaced without shipping the whole unit back and whether the software license stays active on your account. For a handheld plasma cutter, the list is electrodes, nozzles, swirl rings, and air filters. A $600 cutter can cost more than a $1,200 cutter over twelve months if its consumables burn out twice as fast. I've sized that replacement order before.

Small shops, this is where I want you to listen. A small order doesn't mean you deserve a smaller answer. Step 5: Add the cost of making the machine work

Second: assuming the same spec on paper means the same machine in real life. I assumed two 60W CO2 lasers would make the same edge on acrylic. Didn't verify. Turned out one had a different focal length and weaker air assist; it cut about 25% slower and left a frosted edge. We had to rerun the acceptance test. Now every P.O.
